Subsurface Characterization and Impacts on Cost Throughout the Construction Life Cycle

This presentation covers how cost and schedule risks associated with subsurface characterization need to be identified and addressed in the various stages of the project life cycle. The United States Army Corps of Engineers uses a risk register to help guide this process. This risk register needs to be completed by experienced personnel and then revisited as additional information is obtained. The presentation will not only illustrate the risk register process, but also show cost data from post analysis of numerous USACE projects.

Findings

  • Subsurface Modification can be costly (time/$$).
  • While you cannot remove all geotechnical risk, it is possible to manage the risk through an effective subsurface investigation and the appropriate level of geotechnical reports provided in contracting documents.
  • Experienced geotechnical engineer involvement throughout the project life cycle and risk management process is essential for success.
