DFI Announces Keynote Speaker for 38th Annual Conference in Phoenix
DiMaggio to Address LRFD

Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) announces that Jerry A. DiMaggio, P.E., D.GE, M.ASCE, and principal at Jerry A. DiMaggio Consulting, LLC, will present the keynote address at the DFI 38th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations, September 25-28 at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort
in Phoenix, AZ.

The title of the keynote address is “Load Resistance Factor Design Platform and Geotechnical Features (Fact and Fiction).” According to DiMaggio, the integration and acceptance of the Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) platform into U. S. practice has been met with “resistance, frustration, misunderstanding and confusion.” His presentation focuses on the fact and fiction associated with this tool and outlines its advantages, current limitations and the necessary future refinements related to the professional, business and technical aspects of designing and constructing geotechnical features.

DiMaggio has served on many projects related to limit states design (LRFD), risk assessment and management, innovative contracting and accelerated construction. He is the retired Principal Bridge Engineer and National Geotechnical Program Manager with the U.S. Federal Highway Administration in Washington D.C. He has B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering from Clarkson University, is a certified Master Trainer and licensed contract arbitrator. He has consulted on more than 1,000 civil construction projects in all 50 states, throughout the Americas, several Middle Eastern countries and Australia. He has presented hundreds of seminars and workshops on foundations for bridges, buildings, energy facilities, retaining structures and engineered earthworks. DiMaggio serves on several committees and task forces for professional development and technical guidelines, specifications and testing standards. He has been a member of the adjunct faculty at the University of Delaware, Johns Hopkins University, The University of Akron and Columbia University and has been a keynote speaker at over 35 national meetings and conferences. He is the author of many technical papers and has edited three civil engineering books.

DiMaggio’s many honors and awards include: the U.S. DOT Administrator’s Award, the International Geosynthetics Society Achievement Medal, FHWA’s “Engineer for the Year,” and received special recognition for his career contributions from the ASCE, TRB, Schnabel Engineering, PDCA and ADSC. DiMaggio has served on the ASCE Geo-Institute National Board of Governors (2005-2008) and is a member of the Academy for Geotechnical Professionals.
