Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) announces that Bengt H. Fellenius, Dr.Tech., P.Eng., former Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, will be the tenth John Mitchell Lecturer. He will speak at the DFI-EFFC International Conference on Deep Foundations & Piling, May 21-23, 2014 in Stockholm, Sweden at Stockholmsmässan.
Bengt is an internationally active geotechnical consultant and professional engineer specializing in foundation studies. A charter member of DFI, he was an original member of the DFI Board of Trustees, recipient of the DFI Distinguished Service Award in 1993, the Hal Hunt Lecturer in 1999 and the Osterberg Lecturer in 2010.
Dr. Fellenius is a third-generation geotechnical civil engineer and a native of Sweden who received his
M.A.Sc. degree at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm in 1962. After a few years of practice, first as a structural engineer and then as a geotechnical engineer, he joined the Swedish Geotechnical Institute (SGI) as research engineer. During that time he completed a doctorate degree at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. He left Sweden for North America in 1972 working in Canada first for a contracting firm and then a consulting firm before opening his own consulting office. He moved to Ottawa and was a professor in civil engineering, specializing in foundations, at the University of Ottawa for almost 20 years before leaving to concentrate on his consulting practice. He has published more than 300 technical documents, mostly on piling and deep foundations.
The John Mitchell Lecture was established at the 1991 4th International Conference on Piling and Deep Foundations in Stresa Italy. The Lecture was named in honor of John Michael Mitchell, one of the earliest organizers of the DFI International Conferences and a pioneering supporter of DFI’s role as a leader in the global industry.
