The DFI Educational Trust announces that the second annual Thomas J. Wysockey Scholarship Fundraising Dinner will be held on July 16, 2015, at the Union League Club of Chicago. The scholarship is named for Thomas J. Wysockey, chairman emeritus of Thatcher Foundations Inc., Gary, IN, who is an inspiration to young engineers throughout the construction industry. The fund was established in 2014 with a generous donation of $50,000 from Thatcher Foundations, which is part of a pledge from the company totaling $100,000.
The special guest speaker for the dinner is Joseph G. Burns, P.E., S.E., CEng, FAIA, RIBA, LEED AP, managing principal, Thornton Tomasetti. Burns is a passionate advocate for the deeper integration of architecture and engineering, which he promotes through technical innovation in the design of structural systems, collaboration in practice and leadership in building science education. With more than 30 years of experience, Burns specializes in the design of complex structural systems, including earthquake engineering and dynamic analysis.
The Thomas Wysockey Civil Engineering Scholarship Fund provides financial awards to deserving civil engineering students pursuing a career in the deep foundations industry. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, who are attending any accredited U.S. college or university, are eligible to apply. Applicants with a military background will be given special consideration.
Thomas J. Wysockey, a 1953 graduate of The Citadel with a B.S. in civil engineering, joined Thatcher in 1957 and served as vice president, president and, most recently, chairman and owner. His commitment to the industry is evident by his active involvement in several industry associations including as board member of American Subcontractors Association (ASA), Chicago Chapter; director at the Builders Association of Greater Chicago and the Chicagoland Construction Safety Council; trustee of the Construction Advancement Foundation; trustee of the Deep Foundations Institute; president of the Industrial Contractors and Builders Association of Indiana; board member of the Society of American Military Engineers; and member of the Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the ASA, Chicago Chapter.
