Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) has published the Technical Program for the 43rd Annual Conference on Deep Foundations, October 24-27, 2018, in Anaheim, Calif. It is available at archive.dfi.org/annual2018.
The theme of the conference is Mastering the Challenge: Engineering for Complex Loading Conditions in the 21st Century. Technical presentations will focus on innovations and advancements that address performance-based design and construction of deep foundations subjected to increasingly challenging structural demands.
Highlights of the conference include the following:
Keynote Presentation: The California High Speed Rail Project. Hayward Baker and Becho Inc. team up to discuss the Construction Package IV (CP-4) of the California High Speed Rail Project.
Keynote Presentation: Metro LA — Excavation Superlative. The joint presentation, led by young professionals, features the magnitude of several Metro station constructions from three different perspectives: structural engineering, geotechnical engineering and construction.
Special Presentation: Value Engineering – Design Risk and Reward at Major Sports Arena Projects. This presentation highlights different approaches to not only win the job but to also provide added value to owners by reducing construction risk and improving the construction schedule.
Panel Discussion and Webinar: Performance-Based Design: Mastering the Challenge. Structural and geotechnical experts in practice and research provide insights into the meaning, benefits, and challenges of foundation design for projects utilizing PBD.
Panel Discussion: Terminology and Evaluation Criteria of CSL as Applied to Deep Foundations. The Cross-Hole Sonic Logging Terminology Task Force provide a detailed update on acceptance criteria, terminology and evaluation of CSL results.
Panel Discussion: Shortcomings in the Design of Electric System Foundations. The panel discusses the shortcomings in the design of transmission line foundations along with recommended actions for developing industry guidelines.
The conference includes meetings of DFI’s 24 Technical Committees plus Industry-wide Working Group meetings, technical sessions, networking lunches and receptions, the annual awards banquet, 130+ exhibitor displays and the Hal Hunt Lecture on Communications delivered by Olympian Carl Lewis.
The event is expected to draw more than 1,000 engineers, contractors, suppliers, manufacturers and academics involved in the deep foundations industry from around the world to share experiences, exchange ideas and learn about the current state of the practice.
