DFI Announces Osterberg Memorial Lecturer
Presentation at IFCEE 2021

Erik Loehr, Ph.D., P.E., Logan Professor in the College of Engineering at the University of Missouri and a senior principal engineer with Dan Brown and Associates, has been invited to present the DFI Osterberg Memorial Lecture at the International Foundations Congress and Equipment Exposition (IFCEE 2021). The event, being held at the Hyatt Regency Dallas in Dallas, Texas, May 10–14, 2021, is hosted by DFI, ADSC (The International Association of Foundation Drilling), ASCE Geo-Institute, and PDCA (Pile Driving Contractors Association).

The lecture, “The Considerable Benefits of Bi-directional Loading,” looks at the benefits from the adoption and widespread use of the “Osterberg cell” for bi-directional load tests, and how bi-directional load testing has dramatically increased the loading capacity that can be practically delivered for routine testing, which in turn has increased the frequency of testing for both research and project-specific purposes.

Erik Loehr has over 25 years of experience conducting geotechnical engineering research, most recently including work to evaluate the benefits of post-grouting for drilled shafts with funding from the Federal Highway Administration and the California Department of Transportation. Loehr has authored or co-authored numerous publications, including the most recent updates to FHWA’s Geotechnical Engineering Circulars 5 and 10, and has contributed to development of practical reliability-based design provisions for several state departments of transportation and AASHTO. He is an active member of DFI, the International Association of Foundation Drilling (ADSC), the ASCE Geo-Institute and the Transportation Research Board.

The annual Osterberg Memorial Lecture and Award was established in honor of Dr. Jorj O. Osterberg to recognize innovations in deep foundations construction related to engineering design, testing or education.
