Billy Beane, Oakland A’s general manager and the subject of the bestselling book and movie, Moneyball, will be the Deep Foundations Institute’s 2015 Hal Hunt Lecturer*. He will present the lecture on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 14, 2015, during the DFI’s 40th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Oakland, Calif., October 12-15, 2015.
Considered one of the most progressive and talented baseball executives in the game today, Beane has molded the Oakland Athletics into one of professional baseball’s most consistent winners since taking over as general manager following the 1997 season. Beane shattered traditional Major League Baseball (MLB) beliefs that big payrolls equated wins by implementing a statistical methodology that led the Oakland A’s, one of the worst teams in baseball with one of the lowest payrolls, to six American League West Division Titles. That strategic methodology has come to be known as the “Moneyball” philosophy, named for the bestselling book and Oscar nominated film chronicling Beane’s journey from general manager to hero to celebrated management genius. Most recently, Beane was named Major League Baseball Executive of the Year for the second time by Baseball America in 2013.
During his lecture, “Moneyball: Lessons for Life and Business from Baseball’s Best General Manager,” Beane will convey his innovative, winning style of management and leadership, which involves utilizing analytics to identify undervalued assets to create and sustain a competitive advantage.
The annual Hal Hunt Lecturer is a highlight of the Annual Conference, and is named after Hal Hunt, one of the initial organizers of DFI, known for his notable communication style.
