Allen W. Cadden, P.E., D.GE, is presenting the Lizzi Lecture at ISM’s 14th International Workshop on Micropiles (IWM) on August 21-23, 2019, in Broadbeach on the Gold Coast of Australia. His presentation, titled Micropiles: World Wide Evolution Trends, is the 10th annual Lizzi Lecture delivered since inauguration of the series in 2008.
The Lizzi Lecturer is a micropile practitioner invited by the ISM Steering Committee who is recognized by ISM as making distinguished contributions to the micropile industry. The lecture honors the spirit and memory of Dr. Fernando Lizzi (1914-2003), the visionary leader of ISM and the inventor of the “pali radice” or original “root pile” foundation system.
Cadden is a principal and chair of the board of directors with Schnabel Engineering, and past chair of ISM. He has been a leader in the advancement of micropile technology through research, education and application of the technology. Cadden joined ISM in 2001 at the Lille, France planning meeting. He has been a regular attendee, organizer and presenter. In addition to his more than 30 years of design, construction and management experiences with Schnabel, he assisted in the development of the FHWA Micropile Design and Construction Manual and was the lead instructor for the NHI micropile class for more than a decade. Through Schnabel Engineering research efforts and ADSC/DFI Micropile Committee activities, he has contributed to research related to buckling, load transfer in bond zones, connection to existing structures as well as advancing the understanding of micropile use and construction in karstic geologic environments. As an active member of DFI, ADSC, ASCE GeoInstitute and ASDSO, he maintains awareness of the state of practice in these specialty areas and is a regularly invited speaker to these societies. He is a past president of the Geo-Institute of ASCE, past chair of ISM and a member of the Board of Directors for the International Conference Organization for Grouting (ICOG). Cadden is a licensed professional engineer in nine states and has been recognized as a Diplomate of Geotechnical Engineering.
The Lizzi Scholarship presentation is also taking place during the workshop. This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student studying in the field of micropiles. The scholarship award consists of financial reimbursement of travel and accommodations expenses for attendance at the workshop, waiver of workshop registration fees, and a suite of fundamental micropile publications. Award recipients make presentation on the micropile research being conducted or proposed at the workshop. The 8th Lizzi Scholarship award winner will be selected from an Australian university by the local organizing committee.
The third World Cup of Micropiles will also be presented at the Australia workshop, which is an international competition to select the best micropile project in the world.
