The blows, usually of a 300 pound hammer falling 18 in. onto a soil sampler casing while making a soil boring.

A device used to slightly twist the casing back and forth around its longitudinal axis as the casing is being drilled into the ground. A casing twister is occasionally used in drilled pile applications.
